About

Emma Heslop is a physical oceanographer with extensive expertise in strategic and business development, shaped by an early career in the technology sector that developed her skills in new market development and communications. Her passion for the ocean grew through sailing, which made her aware of human impacts on marine environments. After completing a PhD in physical oceanography, she became an advocate for sustained ocean monitoring and the broad utility of ocean data across science, government, and industry, now and into the future. Her expertise spans ocean circulation variability, advanced technologies like gliders, model validation, multi-platform observing systems, and the economics of ocean data. She has led research and international collaborations, using business practices to bridge ocean science and societal applications. In 2018, she joined UNESCO’s IOC to advance the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), focusing on the ambitious 2030 Strategy and highlighting the critical role of ocean observations in achieving a sustainable future.
